Salt Lake County Animal Shelter Unveils New Bully Program

Meet some of the new adoptables in the progressive new Bully Program over at SLCO. This program offers the opportunity for volunteers to pair with an adoptable pittie or pittie mix to obtain the AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate. Additionally, it provides FREE spay and neuters to pitties and pittie mixes in the County, as well as low cost Canine Good Citizen training for all pitties and mixes in the County. The goal of this program is to address the disproportionate numbers of pitties in the shelters which would also reduce the disproportionately high euthanasia rates for pitties.

Best Friends will be supporting and collaborating on the program with it's Pit Bulls: Saving America's Dog campaign. I will be a volunteer extrordinaire and photog, and am hoping this program is a huge success. As always, these programs rely on YOU, faithful readers to volunteer, donate, foster, whatever you can do!

Hey,
I'm a friend of Alison and Erik. A little 7 week pittbull puppy was left in my friends yard the other day. I think they took it to the shelter. when they told me about it I thought of your blog and that you might know the best path for the little guy. I can't believe someone would just abandon dogs.
Thanks! and keep up the amazing doggy work!

I am the proud owner of a sweetie of a dog, Java. She is a pit/boxer mix and though she is full of spunk, she is a lovable and sweet dog. I have had her for almost 4 years now and she is 100% my best friend. I moved to Utah a little over a year ago and last September, I purchased a home in South Jordan. Apparently the city passed a pit ordinance (or any dog resembling the breed) in 1997 and I was reported by a neighbor. I have no family here and I cannot sell my home at the moment (trust me- I will). I don't want to live anywhere that discriminates against any animal based on fallacies or assumptions. She is being prosecuted for being born part of a breed that has received a bad rap. It is just not fair. I have one week to vacate her and the animal control officers said to me, "well, you can take her down to the shelter. They took all Vicks dogs." I am completely beside myself at their disrespectful comments and lack of compassion for a dog that I consider my family. Please help and offer any suggestions. I need to find a GREAT home for her or someone who would be willing to take her on a temporary basis. HELP!!! Thank you for standing up for these wonderful and loving dogs. They are so misunderstood.

Hi Monica,

I'm so sorry to hear this. BSL is terrible, and it rips families apart. Please email me asap at woofslc @ gmail.com (remove the spaces).

We will see what we can come up with.
